UNOPS Role

Implementing agency in charge of reviewing and approving the designs for the expansion of Liberia's supply system, and contracting the Environmental Impact Study (EIA)  as well as other specialized studies, construction and supervision of the work.  As part of the project, social management and strengthening of the capacities of the AyA-BCIE Executing Unit was carried out.

Background

The city of Liberia has supply problems, especially in the dry season, this has limited urban growth in areas of interest to the population, as well as prevented the establishment of economic activities in areas of high potential. This project had a preliminary design, carried out by AyA during 2016 and the final designs, including a master plan for the central district, were concluded by UNOPS during 2017. The optimization that UNOPS carried out of the design allowed for expanding the coverage area and the benefited population.

Project benefits

The project aims to expand the drinking water supply system in the central district of Liberia, with the consequent benefits:

  • The water flow will increase by 107 liters per second, that is, the current supply of drinking water will increase by 136%, which will benefit 12,150 people.

  • There will be sufficient water pressure, which will allow us to offer better service thanks to continuity, eliminating service interruptions.

  • The water will have better quality and quantity so there will be a better distribution for the population of Liberia.

  • Areas of potential urban or commercial development will have water to carry out their projects.

Geographic coverage

The project covered two sectors or components of the Central District of Liberia and surrounding areas; the North component that includes the communities of Encinos, Barrio Corazón de Jesús and Nazareth, and the West component that covers from La América to Guardia, passing through the International Airport sector.

The benefited communities include a population of more than 12 thousand people. The following illustrations show the project areas.
