CIRCUNVALACIoN NORTE ROAD CORRIDOR

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) the project contributes to

The ongoing project of the new North Ring Road spans 5.5 km from La Uruca to Calle Blancos, with an investment of $163 million from the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) as part of Costa Rica's Strategic Road Infrastructure Program. This road is one of the most important communication routes in the Greater Metropolitan Area. The first four Functional Units began construction in January 2019 and were inaugurated in June 2023.

UNOPS played a prominent role in defining the strategy to subdivide the project area into 5 sections or functional units, which has facilitated the acceleration of the work, as well as the creation of a center to receive inquiries from the communities.

UNOPS role

UNOPS carries out the supervision of the work, to ensure contractual compliance and control of the quality of the construction, including designs, occupational safety, and social and environmental management.

Project Features:

  • Length of the entire project: 5.5 km between La Uruca (by Abonos Agro) and Guadalupe.

  • The project involves the design of the 4.1 km of missing road infrastructure of National Route No. 39 between La Uruca and Calle Blancos.

  • It includes the construction of the country's longest viaduct, as well as the first two three-level interchanges in the nation.

  • The 5.5 km of the project has been sectioned into five Functional Units:

Constructive Process

The five Functional Units were strategically defined during the project's design stage so that, once a Functional Unit was completed, it could be put into operation independently of the others. The Comptroller General of the Republic demanded that each unit should be functionally independent.

In June 2023, the first four functional units corresponding to the first 4.1 km were put into operation.

Benefits

  • The project will facilitate the flow of about 100,000 vehicles daily.

  • Reduction of traffic jams.

  • Completion of the construction of the national highway Circunvalation 39.
