Expansion of the Potable Water System in Liberia
(Completed)

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Liberia potable water supply system expansion project was part of an agreement between the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA) and UNOPS to strengthen potable water and sanitation services in different regions of the country. The intervention included the construction of more than 25 kilometers of pipelines and two new storage tanks, improving the distribution and continuity of service in communities within the central district of Liberia and surrounding areas.
The project significantly increased potable water supply capacity, benefiting more than 12,000 people and improving water pressure, quality, and service continuity, especially during the dry season. In addition, the project strengthened the conditions for urban, commercial, and tourism development in the area.
UNOPS’ ROLE
UNOPS acted as the implementing agency responsible for the review and approval of designs, the procurement of specialized studies — including the Environmental Impact Assessment — and the construction and supervision of the works.
In addition, UNOPS promoted social management and capacity-building for the AyA-CABEI Executing Unit, contributing to an efficient, sustainable implementation aligned with technical, environmental, and social standards.
