Expansion of the Nicoya Potable Water System
(Completed)

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The Nicoya potable water supply system expansion project was part of an agreement between the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewerage (AyA) and UNOPS to strengthen water and sanitation services in different regions of the country. The intervention included improvements to the Potrero River water intake system, new transmission pipelines, and the construction of pumping stations to optimize system operations.

The works improved water conveyance and enhanced the quality of the water reaching the treatment plant, benefiting more than 20,000 people in the canton of Nicoya. The project contributes to strengthening water security and service continuity for local communities.

UNOPS' ROLE

UNOPS acted as the implementing agency responsible for the review and approval of designs, procurement of specialized studies — including the Environmental Impact Assessment — and execution of the works corresponding to Phase II of the Nicoya project.

In addition, UNOPS promoted social management and capacity strengthening for the AyA-CABEI Executing Unit, fostering a coordinated, efficient implementation aligned with technical, environmental, and social standards.
