New Bridge over the Virilla River on National Route 32

ABOUT THE PROJECT
The new bridge over the Virilla River on Route 32 is a next-generation infrastructure project with a total intervention length of 856 meters, including both the new bridge and the approach sections at each end (Tibás to the south and Santo Domingo to the north), each measuring approximately 285 meters.
The three-lane bridge is 286 meters long and 14.3 meters wide, and includes a pedestrian walkway. The structure consists of three spans — the side spans measure 78 meters each and the central span measures 130 meters — supported by two 50-meter-high piers. The project was completed in September 2020.
The area where this bridge was built, parallel to the existing structure, is one of the country’s busiest traffic corridors. This project has helped ease daily traffic congestion, especially freight transportation, while increasing vehicular capacity along the intervened section.
UNOPS' ROLE
Project management under a full implementation modality.
UNOPS was responsible for the procurement, auditing, and approval of preliminary studies (topography, geotechnics, hydrology, and Environmental Impact Assessment), support for the relocation of public utilities, development of construction designs, construction execution, and project supervision. In addition, UNOPS supported expropriation management processes and other required procedures, carried out the project’s social management component, and strengthened the capacities of the CONAVI-CABEI Executing Unit.
