NEWS

UNOPS Role

UNOPS supervises the work to ensure contractual compliance and quality control, including design oversight, occupational safety, and social and environmental management.

Project Features

The Route 32 project spans a distance of 107 km, connecting the intersection of National Route 32 with National Route 4 at the Sarapiquí crossing to the port of Limón on the country’s Caribbean coast. This highway plays a crucial role in the transportation of agricultural and industrial products for export via the Port of Limón.

In 2019, the Costa Rican government signed an agreement with the Chinese company CHEC (China Harbor Engineering Company) to carry out the project, aiming to enhance road safety, reduce travel times, and increase the road’s capacity for heavy cargo transport.

In 2023, the National Road Council (CONAVI) enlisted UNOPS’s services to oversee the supervision of the work during the final phase of this project, intending to complete it in 2024.

Project benefits

  • The project will enhance road safety on Route 32 and significantly reduce travel times for those journeying along this route.

  • Additionally, it will boost the capacity of the Route 32 highway, which handles 80% of the country's imports and exports that travel this path.

  • This initiative will positively impact the lives of the 470,383 residents of Limón province and the more than 7,000 tourists who visit the area each year.
