Rehabilitation of the Existing Bridge over the
Virilla River on National Route 32
(Completed)

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project consisted of the rehabilitation and expansion of a key bridge and its access roads, with the objective of improving the safety, capacity, and durability of this important road connection. The intervention expanded the structure from two to three lanes and incorporated an adequate pedestrian solution, while modernizing the bridge to comply with current standards, including seismic-resistant design requirements.

The works included structural reinforcement of the bridge, replacement of deteriorated elements, and improvements to systems such as drainage and safety barriers. Thanks to this intervention, traffic flow — with more than 25,000 vehicles traveling daily through the corridor — was optimized, congestion on a strategic route was reduced, and the continuity and resilience of this infrastructure were ensured for the coming years.

UNOPS' ROLE

Project management under a full implementation modality.

UNOPS acted as the implementing agency responsible for the procurement, auditing, and approval of preliminary studies (topography, geotechnics, hydrology, and Environmental Impact Assessment), support for the relocation of public utilities, development of construction designs, construction execution, and project supervision. UNOPS also carried out the project’s social management component and strengthened the capacities of the CONAVI-CABEI Executing Unit.
